Cycling and routes from Puerto del Carmen

Lanzarote, with its volcanic landscape and mild climate all year round, is a privileged destination for cyclists. Puerto del Carmen, located on the southeast coast of the island, is an excellent starting point for exploring the various routes that Lanzarote has to offer, from coastal walks to challenging mountain climbs.

Puerto del Carmen: An ideal start
Puerto del Carmen is one of the most popular tourist areas of Lanzarote, known for its extensive beaches and lively nightlife. However, for cyclists, its main attraction lies in its proximity to some of the island’s most emblematic routes. From here, it is easy to access roads that connect with both coastal and inland landscapes, allowing a variety of routes adapted to all levels of experience.

Route to El Golfo and los Hervideros
One of the most recommended routes from Puerto del Carmen is the one that leads to El Golfo, passing through the spectacular cliffs of Los Hervideros. This route, about 50 kilometers round trip, offers a moderate challenge and impressive scenery. Leaving Puerto del Carmen, follow the LZ-2 highway towards Yaiza, from where you take the LZ-704 towards El Golfo. Along the way, cyclists can stop at Los Hervideros, where Atlantic waves collide with volcanic rock creating a stunning natural spectacle. Upon reaching El Golfo, you can enjoy the view of the green lagoon before returning to Puerto del Carmen.

Route to La Geria and Teguise
For those looking for a more challenging route, the route to La Geria and Teguise is an excellent option. This approximately 70 kilometer round trip journey offers the opportunity to cycle through the famous La Geria wine region, known for its vineyards planted in volcanic ash. Leaving Puerto del Carmen, take the LZ-30 road towards Uga and then continue through La Geria, where cyclists can admire the unique vineyards and perhaps stop for a wine tasting. From here, continue towards Teguise, the ancient capital of Lanzarote, before returning to the starting point.

Route to Famara Another attractive option is the route that leads to Famara beach, famous among surfers. This route, about 60 kilometers round trip, combines the challenge of the climb with the reward of an impressive view. From Puerto del Carmen, follow the LZ-30 road towards Teguise, and then take the LZ-402 towards Famara, where cyclists can enjoy the sea breeze and the view of the majestic Risco de Famara.
