Places of interest: Los Hervideros

Los Hervideros are one of the most impressive natural wonders of Lanzarote. Located on the southwest coast, near the Timanfaya National Park, Los Hervideros are the result of ancient volcanic eruptions that formed a series of caves, cliffs and underground tunnels in the volcanic rock. When the Atlantic hits these rock formations with force, sea water seeps through the cracks and is violently expelled into the air, creating a visual spectacle reminiscent of a boiling hotbed, hence its name.

This phenomenon is especially impressive during days of strong surf, when the waves can reach great heights and create a deafening roar. The landscape around Los Hervideros is a testament to the powerful interaction between fire and water, two of the most representative elements of Lanzarote. The black rock, shaped by solidified lava, contrasts dramatically with the deep blue of the ocean and the foaming white of the waves, offering an unforgettable sight.

The area has trails enabled so that visitors can approach the edges of the cliffs safely and enjoy the views of this imposing natural landscape. From Puerto del Carmen, one of the main tourist centers on the island, getting to Los Hervideros is quite simple and quick. The car journey lasts approximately 30 minutes, covering about 25 kilometers. To get there, you must take the LZ-2 highway towards Yaiza, a picturesque town that is an ideal stop to have a coffee or enjoy the landscape. After passing Yaiza, continue along the LZ-704 in the direction of El Golfo, another place of interest famous for its Laguna Verde. Along this route, you will find several signposted detours towards Los Hervideros.

While there is no direct public transportation from Puerto del Carmen to Los Hervideros, many tourist agencies offer excursions that include this destination, as well as other nearby attractions such as El Golfo and the Salinas de Janubio. It is also possible to rent a car or hire a taxi to make the journey independently, which offers the advantage of being able to explore the area at your own pace. Once in Los Hervideros, it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes, as the terrain is uneven, and don’t forget a camera to capture the spectacular views. The combination of volcanic nature and the power of the ocean makes Los Hervideros a must-visit for those seeking to discover the wild and primeval essence of Lanzarote.
