Places of interest: Papagayo beaches

The beaches of Papagayo, located in the extreme south of Lanzarote, are a true natural paradise within the Los Ajaches Natural Park. This protected area is home to some of the most spectacular beaches on the island, characterized by its crystal-clear turquoise waters, golden sands and volcanic landscapes that contrast with the blue of the Atlantic Ocean. This corner of the island is one of the favorite destinations for both tourists and locals, who seek to relax and enjoy the tranquility offered by these beaches, away from the busiest areas. The beaches of Papagayo are actually a set of small coves, among which Playa Mujeres, Playa del Pozo, Playa de la Cera, Caleta del Congrio and Playa de Papagayo itself stand out, which is the most famous. Each has its own charm, but they all share the same natural beauty, with serene and transparent waters, ideal for swimming, diving or simply relaxing in the sun. The area, with its cliffs and volcanic formations, has been preserved in a practically virgin state thanks to its status as a protected area.

How to get to the beaches of Papagayo from Puerto del Carmen

From Puerto del Carmen it is a relatively short journey, about 25 kilometers, which can be done in approximately 30 minutes by car. The route is quite simple and well signposted, also offering beautiful views along the way. To start, you have to take the LZ-2 road south towards Yaiza. Upon reaching the Playa Blanca roundabout, take the exit towards the Los Ajaches Protected Area, where the Papagayo beaches are located. It is worth mentioning that access to these beaches is regulated, and a small entrance fee is charged, generally around three euros per vehicle, which is used for the conservation of the natural park.

The last stretch of the route is not paved, which can make it somewhat more complicated for drivers, since it is a dirt road, but it can be traveled with normal cars without too much difficulty. This path leads to a parking lot where visitors can leave the car and walk towards the different coves that make up Papagayo. For those who prefer not to drive, another option is to take a boat from the port of Playa Blanca, which provides a more relaxed and scenic experience.

Once in Papagayo, it is important to be prepared, since the area does not have shops or many tourist services. It is advisable to bring water, food and sun protection, although some coves have small beach bars with limited offerings. This allows visitors to enjoy a more natural and authentic environment, surrounded only by the sea, the sun and the impressive volcanic landscape of Lanzarote.

The beaches of Papagayo are one of the natural treasures of Lanzarote, ideal for those seeking peace and beauty in an unparalleled environment. The proximity to Puerto del Carmen makes it an easy and accessible excursion, perfect for any visitor who wants to see one of the most beautiful places on the island.
