The Mirador del Río, located north of Lanzarote, is one of the most iconic and attractive places in the Canary Islands. Designed by the famous Lanzarote artist and architect César Manrique in 1973, this viewpoint offers spectacular views of the Chinijo archipelago and, especially, the island of La Graciosa. Its unique design and its integration with the natural environment make the Mirador del Río an essential point of interest for any visitor to Lanzarote.
The viewpoint is located at the top of the Risco de Famara, at an altitude of 475 meters above sea level. This privileged location allows visitors to enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the turquoise waters surrounding La Graciosa, as well as the islets of Montaña Clara, Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste. The design of the viewpoint, with its minimalist style and use of local materials, reflects Manrique’s philosophy of harmonizing architecture with the natural landscape.
Inside the viewpoint, visitors can find a cozy cafe with large windows that allow you to enjoy the landscape while having a drink or enjoying a snack. Additionally, there is a souvenir shop and a small gallery displaying Manrique’s work and his influence on the conservation and sustainable development of Lanzarote.
To reach Mirador del Río from Puerto del Carmen, another of Lanzarote’s main tourist centres, you can follow a route that offers a stunning visual experience and a sample of the island’s diverse landscape.
The trip begins by taking the LZ-2 highway north from Puerto del Carmen. Follow this road until you reach the LZ-3 ring road, which surrounds Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote. From there, take the exit towards the LZ-1 highway heading north. This road runs through the area of Teguise, an old town known for its Sunday market and historic architecture.
Continuing along the LZ-1, you reach the coastal town of Arrieta, famous for its beaches and its gastronomic offer, especially fresh seafood. From Arrieta, continue north passing through Punta Mujeres and then to the town of Órzola, the northernmost point of the island and the port from where the ferries leave for La Graciosa.
From Órzola, take the LZ-202 road that ascends towards the Risco de Famara. This route offers stunning views of the cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean. At the end of the LZ-202, follow the signs towards Mirador del Río. The road winds to the top, where the parking lot for the viewpoint is located. The total journey from Puerto del Carmen to the viewpoint is approximately 55 kilometers and takes about an hour by car.
The Mirador del Río is a must-see destination in Lanzarote. Its access from Puerto del Carmen is easy and offers visitors the opportunity to explore one of César Manrique’s masterpieces, while enjoying some of the most impressive views of the island.
