Ironman Lanzarote 2024

The Ironman Lanzarote sporting event is one of the most anticipated and exciting events of the year for the residents of Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote. Every May, our small coastal community transforms into a hive of energy and activity, attracting elite athletes and triathlon fans from around the world. From a resident’s perspective, this event not only tests the competitors, but also provides us with a unique opportunity to showcase the hospitality and beauty of our island.

The day of the competition starts early. Since dawn, the streets of Puerto del Carmen are full of volunteers, organizers and spectators preparing for the start of the Ironman. Residents, many of whom also get involved as volunteers, wake up with excitement and a mix of pride and anticipation. Local shops and cafes open early to offer breakfast and coffee to participants and their families, creating a vibrant and community atmosphere.

One of the most impressive aspects of Ironman Lanzarote is the swimming. The test begins on the main beach of Puerto del Carmen, Playa Grande, where hundreds of athletes immerse themselves in the crystal clear waters of the Atlantic. From the shore, residents and tourists crowd to cheer the swimmers, creating a sea of applause and cheers. For us, it is a spectacle to see how athletes brave the waves and make their way through the water, many of them wearing the colors of their home countries.

After the swim, competitors hop on their bikes to take on the tough, windy cycle route that runs around the entire island. This stage is known for its difficulty, with steep climbs and dizzying descents that test the endurance and courage of triathletes. Throughout the route, residents of the different towns of Lanzarote take to the streets to offer their support, with shouts of encouragement and motivational banners. Watching cyclists pass through our port, against the backdrop of Lanzarote’s volcanic landscapes, is a visually impressive experience that always fills us with pride.

The final segment, the marathon, takes competitors back to Puerto del Carmen, where they must run along the promenade under the heat of the Canarian sun. This is where the community spirit of our town is truly felt. Entire families line up along the route, offering water, fruit and words of encouragement. Local bars and restaurants are filled with spectators enjoying the event while cheering on the runners. The mix of languages and nationalities creates a multicultural and festive atmosphere, reflecting the international attraction of Ironman Lanzarote.

For residents, the Ironman is more than a competition; It is a celebration of human tenacity and an opportunity to share our culture and hospitality with the world. Over the years we have seen how this event has grown and put Lanzarote on the global triathlon map. It has also had a positive impact on our local economy, attracting visitors who fall in love with our island and return year after year.

The day of the Ironman concludes with the arrival of the last runners to the finish line, when the sun sets and the stars begin to shine over the Atlantic. For many of us, it is a time of reflection and gratitude, knowing that we have been part of something truly special. The sense of community, pride in our island and the inspiration we feel watching athletes push their limits make Ironman Lanzarote an unforgettable and deeply meaningful event for everyone in Puerto del Carmen.
